Call for paper

The Software Engineering Code of Ethics and Professional Practice asks professionals to ensure software that for example, does not diminish the quality of life, threaten privacy or harm the environment. Requirements Engineering inevitably raises ethical concerns and questions about the role of human values in software engineering. It is essential to identify these concerns early and to consider them throughout the range of RE activities. Failing to do this will lead to consequences such as violations of privacy and breaches of confidentiality. Failing to account for the role of human values in RE will mean that they will drive RE implicitly.
The objective of this workshop is to explore the intersection of ethics, human values, and requirements engineering. Discussions will address the role of ethics and values in RE practice and research, and we aim to identify emerging trends and research directions.

We invite you to submit research papers on Ethics in Requirements Engineering and topics related. The topics of interest include but not limited to

  • Ethics in RE practice
  • The ethics of RE
  • Human values in RE
  • Elicitation of concerns with ethical importance (such as privacy, fairness, and climate crisis)
  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion in RE
  • (Automated) analysis of ethical requirements
  • Compliance and regulatory RE
  • Lessons learned with respect to ethical aspects in digital projects
  • Ethics-aware requirements engineering
  • Research ethics in RE involving humans
  • Reporting ethical concerns in RE publications
  • Retrieving and storing user data

Aside from research papers, the workshop welcomes industry papers as well. In particular, we are looking for experience reports and short position that provide insights or criticism around software ethics in practice. We also invite journal-first submissions with a brief summary of how the journal paper connects to the workshop theme. In all categories it is possible to submit:

  • Full papers (up to 8 pages)
  • Short/position/vision papers (up to 5 pages)
  • FProposal to present journal-first (up to 2 pages)

Instruction for submission

The paper must describe original work that has not been previously published or submitted elsewhere with the exception of journal-first. Submissions must be written in English. The format of your paper must strictly adhere to the IEEEtran Proceedings Format. There are several versions of the IEEE style. Please make sure you use exactly the versions that are linked below.
LaTeX users: please use the LaTeX class file IEEEtran v1.8 (CTAN archive) and the following configuration (without option ‘compsoc’ or ‘compsocconf’): \documentclass[conference]{IEEEtran}
Microsoft word users: please use the word template (see also its pdf file).

Please submit your paper via the following easychair link: submission link

All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by three members of the program committee and selected based on workshop relevance, academic rigor (only research papers), innovation, industrial applicability, and quality of writing. Accepted papers will appear in the workshop program and will be published in IEEE Digital Library. At least one author is required to register and participate during the workshop.

Session Time Program Responsible
Session1 10:30 - 10:35 Opening: Workshop overview REthics2020 Workshop chairs.
10:35 - 11:15 Keynote: Ethics, Values and Requirements Engineering: What, Why and How.
Abstract: This talk will give an overview of three years of work in the OVIS lab (ovislab.net) at Monash University, Australia. We are exploring how to adapt software engineering methods, including RE, to be more ethical, responsible and respectful of human values. The talk will report on the state of SE research when it comes to ethics/values, the state of industry practice, and what we need to do to improve it.
